NiV Art Centre Invites you to “Up & Down / High & Low” (Talks about sediments) A talk By Thom Vink At 5 p.m., Saturday 23rd February 2019 Venue: NiV Art Centre 210, Neb Sarai, Near IGNOU, New Delhi About the speaker: Thom Vink makes art in response to the urban spaces he moves around, and to the objects he discovers. In his large scale installations, he draws attention to the physicality of the site, integrating the building’s actual space into the artwork. Vink works with fascinating and remarkable analogies to methods from psychotherapy, forms of abstract art, biological structures, physical perceptual phenomena and literary and non-literary narratives. He draws a great deal of inspiration from the pre-Google era. The encyclopaedias from that age, with compact information about indisputable truths, illustrated by mysterious images and fascinating graphs, form a rich source in his work. His Solo exhibitions include “Moth House”, Stroom Center for Visual Art and Architecture, The Hague (2010), “Evidence” in Gallery Muu in Helsinki, Finland (2004), “Home” in Gallery 300m3 in Gothenburg, Sweden (2004), “Complex” in Aaltonen Museum in Turku, Finland (2005), “Changers” in Youkobo Art Space in Tokyo, Japan (2009), and taking part in the exhibition “Jump into the Unknown” during the 56 Biennale of Venice, Italy (2015). He has participated in group exhibitions, collaborations and artist’s residencies in many different countries, and most recently the video installation work “Fields of Dissonance”, has been presented at the Manifesta 12 in Palermo, Italy (2018). Abstract: Thom Vink’s consistent body of work typically involves the presentation of effective complex streams of ideas and images, to understand the city and its architecture as an organic process. Where the Troika- the urbanists, the property developers and the politicians- of city developers propose social changes through public policies, making us believe the idea of development on false notions. This artist whispers poetic and occasionally unsettling footnotes. Let’s hear the sediments and interpret.
